A good night for Labour. Increasing our share of the vote and our team of Councillors. A superb win in the new ward of Old Heath & Hythe, where a strong team of three overturned LibDem established councillors.
A disappointment in Wivenhoe for an excellent candidate; the LibDems ran a targetted campaign - but at least we kept the Tory out. Over 700 votes in Christchurch/New Town on a minimal campaign. Modest but important consolidation elsewhere.
Thanks are due to all 51 candidates who represented the Labour message everywhere. Thanks also to the many activists who worked so hard, and a warm welcome back to a few who had become a little distant.
There remains a deeply anti-Tory core in Colchester and the tired old Tory message about inefficiency and moving to a commissioning Council (like the County Council) fell on deaf ears yet again.
Hopefully Labour has regained the confidence it lost after the last all out elections when we had the worst night in our history. We can now be more confident that Labour will soon lead the Council. That means we can send out more radical and challenging messages about how Labour in power makes a real difference.
Both the party and the Group look very different to how they did even 5 years ago. Both are much larger! This is a major opportunity to move forward which will only succeed if the party opens up to a more inclusive approach and membership becomes enjoyable as well as productive!

Labour MP and Former Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Keir Starmer, visited Fresh Beginnings in Colchester today.
Sir Keir Starmer, Labour MP for Holborn & St Pancras and former Director of Public Prosecutions, is visiting Colchester to speak to workers, volunteers and clients at the local charity, Fresh Beginnings. The charity has been instrumental, with Colchester Borough Council, in resettling four Syrian refugee families in Colchester with a fifth family arriving imminently. Sir Keir has taken a keen interest in the refugee crisis and was one of three Labour MPs who wrote to Prime Minister, David Cameron, last September seeking urgent action to address the issue.
Sir Keir was joined by Labour councillors Tina Bourne, Rosalind Scott, Julie Young and Tim Young who have all been involved in Colchester’s positive response to the refugee crisis.
Cllr Tim Young said,
"We are honoured that Sir Keir Starmer wanted to visit Colchester to see the work we are doing to help refugees settle in Colchester. Fresh Beginnings are doing a superb job and they can show Sir Keir what has to be done in order to allow refugees from Syria settle comfortably and successfully into our communities."

Tollgate and the Local Plan
Sadly a lot of misinformation has been circulated about the Tollgate Planning application - some claims by the Tories are misleading.
The Borough Council has to have a strong robust Local Plan to protect itself from developers building anywhere. The Local Plan in place designates land for certain development purposes which then allows the Council through the Planning Committee to control what development takes place and where. Ignoring the Local Plan and allowing departures opens up the Countryside to developers and defeats the whole purpose of having locally agreed plans.
- All parties support this approach.
- The Tollgate application was not consistent with the Local Plan
- The Local Plan was agreed by all Parties and the Tories should be supporting it not trying to undermine it
- One senior Tory Councillor also voted AGAINST the application.
- The Tories (including Pritti Patel MP) did not raise the issue of the designation of Tollgate during the Local Plan process
- The Tory manifesto does not pledge to scrap the Local Plan
- The Local Plan should be kept under review and adapted from time to time but not just to respond to one proposed development
