"Mrs Speaker" Sally Bercow campaigns for
Labour in Colchester

Sally Bercow, the wife of House of Commons Speaker John Bercow, has been in Colchester today to lend her support to Colchester's Labour Candidate, Jordan Newell.

Sally Bercow and Jordan Newell with activists in GreensteadMrs Bercow - a Labour candidate for Westminster City Council - visited Greenstead Community Centre where she joined around twenty local Labour activists, many of whom were new young members.

Mrs Bercow then joined activists on the door step to campaign for local Labour councillor, Julie Young.

With thousands of Twitter followers, Mrs Bercow has joined the likes of Sarah Brown and John Prescott as one of the most recognizable Labour figures on the social media website.

Welcoming Mrs Bercow to Colchester, Jordan said:

"Sally Bercow is probably best known as the wife of Commons Speaker John Bercow, but she is a formidable political activist in her own right. I am delighted that she has been able to spare time away from her own campaign in Westminster to come to Colchester."

Jordan Newell and Sally Bercow watching the Leaders' DebateAfter spending over an hour on the door steps of Greenstead, Mrs Bercow went to the University of Essex - where her husband graduated - to watch the second Leaders' Debate.

Sally, Jordan and a group of Labour activists joined the hundreds of students packed into the Students Union to watch the three party leaders debate, which was shown on large screens.

Students Union President, Ibby Mehmet said:

"It was a delight to host the leader’s debate, especially with our special guests, the Speaker's wife Sally Bercow and the Labour candidate, Jordan Newell. If this is a reflection of the Labour Party’s national campaign, with real grassroots activists and large personalities in support, it would seem Labour are in the right direction with the right attitude. Both Jordan and Sally know Essex University very well and for us this event was very symbolic."
