Jordan nominated as Labour Candidate
as local activists rally to
campaign
Colchester
Labour Party has officially nominated Jordan Newell as
its candidate for the forthcoming General
Election.
Party officials
today (19 April) submitted Jordan's nomination papers to Colchester
Borough Council just days after around thirty local activists and
supporters gathered in Greenstead to rally behind Jordan ahead of
the election campaign.
Speaking at Greenstead Community Centre last week, Jordan
thanked Colchester Labour Party activists for their support
over the last two years that he has been the town's parliamentary
candidate.
"For the past two years you have worked
alongside me to ensure that the people of Colchester know that
Labour has a voice in our town and when it speaks it speaks for
them," he said.
Jordan also launched a fierce attack on the
Conservatives' plans not to raise National Insurance, citing their
previous opposition to the National Minimum Wage - one of Labour's
proudest achievements.
"What the Tories want to see happen is for
businesses to benefit from the recovery without contributing
anything towards it. But why should that surprise us? They opposed
the National Minimum Wage and insisted that it would cost a million
jobs. They were wrong then, and they're wrong
now."
Following changes to election law, the Committee for Standards in
Public Life has recommended that candidates at parliamentary
elections should publish a declaration of interests. The
Labour Party supports the publication of such declarations, and
Jordan Newell has published his
declaration.
Speaking today, Jordan Newell said:
"I am delighted that today, Colchester
Labour Party has formally adopted and nominated me as their
parliamentary candidate. I too welcome the publication of
candidates' declaration of interests as a new way to promote
openness and transparency in our political system."
