Harriet Harman comes to Colchester

 

Labour's Deputy Leader Harriet Harman MP was in Colchester today (13 October) for a special evening with Labour Party members from across Essex and Suffolk.

 

HH JNAt an event hosted by Colchester Labour Party at The Town Hall, Ms Harman addressed supporters before fielding questions on a wide range issues including the economy, crime and policing, equality and future Labour Party policies. 

 

Harriet Harman MP said: "Just because we are out of power, does not mean we are powerless." She cited Ed Miliband's interventions in the phone hacking scandal, on women's pensions and with the energy industry as examples of Labour's influence in opposition.

 

Ms Harman, who is Shadow Culture Secretary and Labour Party Chair, also took time to talk to local media and backed the town's Labour Councillors for their hard work in protecting and defending the people of Colchester from Tory Government cuts.

 

The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party also praised Colchester Labour Party for their good results in May's Local Elections.

 

"I'm here to congratulate the Labour Councillors on how well they did in May this year. There were some really spectacular results and we are hoping to build on that", she said.

 

Harriet Harman, who last visited Colchester in 2007, is the first Deputy Leader of the Labour Party to visit the town.

 

Harriet Harman was a key member of the Governments of both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. She served as Secretary of State for Social Security and Solicitor-General under Mr Blair, and Leader of the House of Commons under Gordon Brown. She was Acting Leader of the Opposition following the General Election and prior to Ed Miliband's election.
