Colchester Labour Party is spearheading a campaign to change the name of the ‘Harbour’ council ward to the area’s locally recognized name of ‘Old Heath’.
Launching the campaign this week, Colchester Labour Chairman Jordan Newell said:
“The Harbour ward name does not really reflect the nature of the area since the boundaries were changed some time ago. Most of the old harbour and riverside is now in other council wards so it would be sensible to alter the name of this ward to ‘Old Heath’ which is what many local residents refer to it as in any case”.
Mr Newell and Colchester Council Labour Group Leader Cllr Tim Young are in the process of making a formal request to the Borough Council to change the name of the ward, with the backing of many local residents.
Old Heath resident Mark Jones said:
"Most people in this area would feel that they live in Old Heath. If you told them they live in Harbour, I think you would be met with blank faces. That's why it's important we all support the current campaign for a change of name to something that truly reflects the local community."
Supporters of the proposals have already spoken to local people and it is clear they fully support the idea. Once the plan has local backing, it is hoped that the council will grant the request.
