Labour celebrates election victory

Cyril Liddy

Colchester Labour Party is celebrating after making the only gain in last night's Local Elections.

Labour won the Wivenhoe Quay seat from the Conservatives, while shaving down other Tory and Lib Dem majorities across the borough.

Cyril Liddy won convincingly in Wivenhoe Quay, beating the Conservatives by 376 votes.

Each of Labour's sitting Councillors - Tina Dopson, Kim Naish and Mike Lilley - were re-elected with increased majorities. Cllr Tina Dopson secured 61% share of the vote in St Andrews, maintaining Labour's strong showing in Greenstead despite a very nasty anti-Labour campaign.

Colchester Labour Chair Jordan Newell said:

"We made the only gain of the night, from the Tories, which is also the only change in the Council's make up in over two years. It is clear that Labour is the only party making progress in Colchester, while the other parties stagnate."

Labour Councillors will now hold talks about the make up of any administration as no party has an overall majority.
