Labour welcomes new members

Shadow Energy Minister Baroness Smith was the guest speaker at a special event for the newest members of Colchester Labour Party on Saturday evening (15 October).

Angela Smith, who is the former Labour MP for Basildon, spent two hours chatting to some of the new members who attended the event and encouraged them to get involved in local party activities.

Baroness Smith said:

"It was a great to meet some of the new Members who have joined the Labour Party in Colchester and talk with them about local and national issues.  What was interesting is how many people have in the past been prepared to vote to the Lib Dems to stop the Tories in Colchester - but will never do so again.  I really enjoyed meeting them."

Since the General Election, Colchester Labour Party has seen nearly 100 new members joins its ranks, with many more local residents expressing their support for the party

Colchester Labour Party Chairman Jordan Newell said:

"I was really pleased Angela was able to come to Colchester to meet some of of our new members and welcome them to the party. We've seen a surge in our support locally and it was really good to hear the wide range of reasons why they have joined us."

Outlining why they had joined Labour, each of the new members had a different reason but many agreed it was a combination of local and national issues and dissatisfaction with the Coalition Government.

Angela Smith, the Rt Hon Baroness Smith of Basildon, is Shadow Energy & Climate Change Minister and Shadow Northern Ireland Minister in the House of Lords.
