Young people abandoned as unemployment rises

Colchester Labour Councillor Tim Young has attacked the Government for failing young people, as the latest unemployment figures revealed that over 22% of 16 to 24 year olds are now out of work.

Cllr Young, Leader of the Colchester Borough Council Labour Group and Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said the figures showed the Tory Government's economic policies had failed.

Tim Young said:

"It is particularly soul-destroying to see the youth unemployment rate still at over 1 million and rising. The Tories and LibDems are virtually writing off the life chances of so many young people with their failed and discredited agenda; they should immediately sign up to Labour's plan for jobs and growth to restore some hope and revive our economic fortunes."

"Today's figures showing another increase in the rate of unemployment are further evidence that the policies of the ConDem government are hurting but not working," Cllr Young added.
